Bicycling Belt Loop for Cub Scouts Today I am highlighting the Bicycling Belt Loop from the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. This fits in well with the cycling theme I am featuring this month. Fall is approaching and is wonderful time to get out biking with the Cub Scouts. This belt loop would make a good starting point for a pack meeting or pack bike hike.
Bike Hike Safety and Etiquette Before going on a bicycle ride with a group of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, or Venturers, review some bike safety and etiquette rules. Includes a printable discussion aid.
Ideas for May Pack Meeting - Health and Fitness The core value for Cub Scouts for the month of May is Health and Fitness. According to the program helps health and fitness is:
Being personally committed to keeping our minds and bodies cleanand fit.Cub Scouts will learn that it is important and easy to eat a healthy diet and how a fitnessprogram can be part of their daily routine.
Bear Den Meeting Plan | Ride Right and Bicycle Belt Loop This meeting plan covers all of the requirements for Bear Achievement 14: Ride Right. It also meets all of the requirements for the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Bicycling belt loop.
Bicycle License Plate Craft This month I am featuring a cycling theme. If you are doing this theme with Cub Scouts, they might enjoy making their own "license plates" for their bikes. They can put their names on them or decorate them however they like.
Cycling Theme I am featuring a Bikes theme this month. This theme has lots of useful information for Cub Scouts, but much of it applies to Boy Scouts and Venturers also. Boy Scouts can use the aids you will see this month with the Cycling merit badge. And Venturers will find this information useful for the Cycling/Mountain Biking elective for the Ranger Award.
Cycling Safety Crossword Puzzle Puzzles are a fun way to reinforce concepts with Cub Scouts. This puzzle helps Cub Scouts think about some basic bike safety concepts. It would make a good gathering activity at a pack bicycling activity or a den meeting.
Wolf Den Meeting Plan for Achievement 9 - Be Safe at Home and on the Street This achievement is a little dry, so it needs some fun injected. One way to do this is to go for a short bike ride, which fits in with the requirements.
Bike Repair Tips This month I am focusing on cycling. If you are going to ride a bike, you'd better make sure it is in good repair first. You don't want to be riding along and have your front wheel fall off or your brakes not work. I found a great website called How To Fix Bikes which offers all sorts of advice on - drum roll... - how to fix bikes!
Bike Rodeo Our pack might be doing a bike rodeo this year. I have visited these before, but we have never put one on ourselves. So I am researching possible "stations" which the kids can rotate through for the activity.
BSA Bike Safety Guidelines BSA has a list of bike safety guidelines on the Scouting.org site. The guidelines and procedures apply to all BSA unit, council, and national program activities involving bicycling.
Bicycle Riding Log For some cycling recogintions, Scouts must record the time or distance spent riding. A basic log sheet is located at the bottom of this post to help you complete this. If you really become interested in cycling, you might consider getting a simple bike computer to aid you in figuring out this data. These devices record the time spent riding, mileage, average speed, and more.
Bike Inspection Checklist Before riding a bike, Scouts should know how to do an inspection of the bicycle and check that it is in working order. The checklist below will give you a good starting point. You will need to explain each step to the Scouts so they learn the terminology and why each part is important.
Bicycling Pin for Cub Scouts If your Cub Scout has earned the Bicycling belt loop, he can take it one step further and earn the Bicycling pin. Both recognition are from the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. So find some nice bike trails in your area, pack some snacks and plenty of water, and go riding!
Bicycle Helmet Fitting This month I am focusing on cycling. Helmets are required for all BSA cycling activities. It is important to note that this applies to adults also. Your helmet isn't going to do you much good if it doesn't fit correctly. Here are some guidelines.
