Aquatics Cub Scout Theme

Most Cub Scouts enjoy aquatics activities, so try an aquatics theme for your group. Even non-swimmers can enjoy many of these activities.
There are a few ideas listed below, and more will gradually be added. Organize a pack meeting or den meeting around them. Or plan an overall theme for your Cub Scout year and add an element or two from the theme into your program each month.

Sharks and Minnows Here is a game to go with this month's aquatic theme. It can be used to fuflill requirement 2 for the Swimming belt loop from the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program: "Play a recreational game in the water with your den, pack, or family." This is a simple version of the game. There are many, many variations and some groups add "house rules" as well.
BSA Swim Test Pack your swimsuit on top. Those are always the instructions when packing for summer camp, because one of the first things we will have to do when we get there is the swim test. The BSA swim test is used to determine ability level so that participants can swim in an area which is appropriate for them.
Sweet 16 of BSA Safety | Skill Level Limits The most familiar application of skill level limits is the swim tests which are administered at summer camp. But there are other examples as well.
Pool Tote Craft If you are looking for a craft for your pack pool party or aquatics themed meeting, you could let the Scouts decorate their own pool totes. Then they can carry all of their squishy balls, goggles, dive sticks, and other pool accessories themselves.
CD Fish Craft Instructions for a fish shaped craft made from old CDs. Make one or make several and put them together as a mobile.
Swimming Belt Loop for Cub Scouts If your Cub Scouts go to the pool during the summer, they can earn their Swimming belt loop without a lot of effort.
Jaws Song Here's a song to go with this months aquatics theme. This is a classic camp song. There are lots of variations. If you want to ham it up even more, change your voice when singing the different verses to sound like a mama, papa, lady, etc.
Sun Safety Activity This is a good time of year to review sun safety with scouts of all ages. Damage to the skin from sunburn can have lasting effects.
Piranha Ball Here is a another game to go with this month's aquatic theme. It can be used to fuflill requirement 2 for the Swimming belt loop from the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program: "Play a recreational game in the water with your den, pack, or family." This is a good game to play if you have some kids in your group who are not strong swimmers. They can play this game in chest-deep water and still have a lot of fun. For swimmers who need more of a challenge, the group can go to deeper water and tread water while they play.
Powdered Sports Drink Recipe Sports drinks like Gatorade or Power Aid are designed to replenish the water and salt your body loses when you are active or exercising. You can mix up your own powdered mix to accomplish this for a fraction of the cost of purchasing these drinks by the bottle.
Safe Swim Defense Safe Swim Defense provides the steps which a BSA unit must take to safely participate in an activity which involves swimming.
Water Rescue Methods Since I am focusing on an aquatics theme this month, I thought I'd post about water rescue methods. These are methods used to rescue someone who is in trouble in the water. You will see these methods throughout the BSA programs from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts to Venturing.
Sharksicles Recipe Nobody wants to go out swimming and meet up with a shark! But if you are at a Cub Scout meeting and the shark is your popsicle snack, that is another story. So to go along with this month's aquatics theme for Cub Scouts, here is a snack idea.
My Turtle Swims Sideways ZM sang this song at Webelos camp and LC sang it at Boy Scout camp and they've continued singing it since. This song is pure boy humor.
