Hiking Belt Loop for Cub Scouts Hiking is one of the new additions to the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program. I really like this added incentive to get our Cub Scouts outdoors.
Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award If your Cub Scouts attended day camp or resident camp over the summer, you might want to encourage them to work on their Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award.
Tent Pitching Contest (Standard or Blindfolded) Tent pitching contests are an inter-patrol activity staple. To make it a blindfolded tent pitching contest, just add blindfolds. If you want, let one team member keep his vision, but he can only participate by giving verbal instructions to the others. This makes a good communications exercise also.
Pot and Towel Rack Camp Gadget These instructions are for a pot and towel drying rack. There is a small picture of a similar gadget in the Boy Scout handbook.
Cub Scout World Conservation Award This award is available to Wolves, Bears, and Webelos. The purpose of the award is to help Cub Scouts think about how we are all interdependent on our environment. The requirements are differnent depending which year the Cub Scout is in.
May Cub Scout Theme - Cub Cafe (Health and Fitness) The core value for the month of May is Health and Fitness. Along with the regular pack meeting plan for this core value, BSA also plans to release a Cub Cafe theme.
Spring Camporee My Webelos had a great weekend at our district Spring Camporee. Three of my four Webelos attended. Fortunately the severe weather which had been predicted earlier for late Saturday afternoon passed to the south of us, so we did not have to bug out early. The field was wet and muddy and there was some rain, but that didn't dampen their spirits.
Webelos Mini Week Camp at Pine Ridge I'm looking forward to three days and two nights of camping fun at Pine Ridge Scout Camp.
60 Hikes Within 60 Miles Book Series We are coming up on some prime hiking season. In the spring the temperatures are mild and it isn't buggy yet. So I am reviewing my favorite hiking book - 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles. Hopefully there is one available in your area.
Edible Campfires Recipe Scouts should know how to build a fire. I am always amazed how many kids don't understand the concept of using tinder and small sticks. This snack will help introduce the concept.
The Outdoor Code Every Scout who is spending time outdoors should be familiar with the Outdoor Code. It is especially important for Webelos, Boy Scouts, and Venturers who are out camping regularly.
The Twelve Days of Camping Song Heres another silly song for you. This works well at Christmas (because of the tune) or at camp (because of the theme).
Menu Planning with Webelos My Webelos den is going to district camporee at the end of the month. So at last night's Outdoorsman focused meeting, we did some menu planning.
My Favorite Knot Book This book was recommended a few years ago when I went to Cub Scout BALOO training. I am not a "knot person". I can watch someone do a knot and repeat it, but an hour later it is forgotten.
Knot Terminology It is helpful to go over the terminology with Scouts before working on learning a knot. That way we have a common vocabulary to start with.
Troop Running a Pack Meeting Tonight, our Boy Scout Troop is running the Pack meeting for our Cub Scouts. They are going to divide into dens and each den will have several Boy Scouts doing skill instruction with them. They are working on things like knots and outdoor skills which relate to the advancement for each den. While they are doing that, the Scoutmaster (my husband), is going to talk to the Pack parents about the Boy Scout program.
Camping Packing List One thing new scouts (and new leaders) often ask the first few times they go camping is "What do I need to bring?" Download a suggested list of personal camping gear.
June Cub Scout Theme - Head West Young Man (Perseverance) Word on the street is that BSA will release a June Cub Scout theme called "Head West Young Man" for the June core value of Perseverance.
How to Build a Fire Skit Skits can be a great way to start an instruction program. They get everyone's attention focused. This is a skit I saw at a camporee, but it would also work as an introduction to a session on fire building.
Hiking Safety (Front Country) These guidelines are appropriate for a front country adventure in an area like a park. That is the only type of hiking which is appropriate for Cub Scouts. If you are going on a back country hike, then you need to consider some other safety rules, like bringing a fire source and knife.
Outdoor Essentials for Cub Scouts Even as winter approaches and it gets to cold for the Cub Scouts to get out tent camping, we can still get them outdoors on a day hike. Make sure your Cub Scouts know the 10 Outdoor Essentials.
Fire Safety with Cub Scouts I like to review some fire safety rules with my Webelos before the fire is built. That way they all know the expectations.
Poison Ivy Fact and Fiction Summertime activities in the outdoors are great, but watch out for poison ivy. The best way to avoid problems is to avoid poison ivy.
